Coal © Roy Hall I purchased coal, A Human History, by Barbara Freese, at Angus and Roberrtson for just $6.95. I guess coal is not a subject a lot of people would want to read about. It is a well researched and well-written book. Barbara Freese was Assistant Attorney General in Minnesota for more than twelve years. She helped to enforce her state's air polution laws. She refers to London's historic "Black Fog" December 1952. I was in Cyprus at that time but your mother was in London. A previous bad fog in 1950 I remember well; I was sixty miles from London and it was very bad there. I did not see the sun for four days. The visbility there was at times just a few feet. Each day I looked at it and wondered when it would end. Dec 5th -9th 1952 Just one of the many reasons why we came to Australia. [Roy Hall is Beverley Paine's father. Pioneering members of the home education movement in Australia, Beverley and Robin Paine are passionate advocates of true educational choice for families. They began homeschooling their children in 1986 and three years later started the South Australian Home Based Learners network.
Beverley wrote Getting Started with Homeschooling in 1995-97 and since then continues to write books and booklets on home education. She balances spending time helping home educators with working in her garden and renovating her home, as well as continuing to build her collection of writing on a variety of homeschooling subjects. Beverley maintains an extensive collection of websites as well as several Yahoo groups supporting families teaching their children at home.
In 2007 Beverley joined the HEA and became a committee member in 2008: she also edits and produce the HEA Newsletter, HEA magazine, Stepping Stones for Home Educators, annual Resource Directory and other HEA publications.
